The "Pet Sounds" alblum (which included "God Only Knows") marked the transition of The Beach Boys from surf music to something more serious. I like their surf music also.
Pet Sounds was Brian Wilson's attempt to create something as great as the Beatles Rubber Soul album and eventually inspired the Beatles to create an album as good as pet sounds in Sgt. Pepper's. All three of these albums each inspired by the other are some of the first albums to bring psychedelic music to the main stream and credited as the pioneers of the genre.
